In 1999 Madonna Badger, Mark Blackwell, Helena Christensen(the supermodel) and Marvin and Jaclynn Jarett (husband and wife team) and with investment from Sam Waksal Nylon was founded and in 1999 on April 6 the first issue was published.
It was sold in 2005 to Pennsylvania businessman Don Hellinger. In 2009 on their 10 year anniversary they release the very first issue online for free on their website. Then later on in 2009 they partnered with iTunes to create a free summer playlist for Nylon's annual music issue. In 2010 Nylon partnered with YouTube for their Young Hollywood issue which allowed readers and online viewers to watch the entire issue on YouTube, they also did this for the 2011 Young Hollywood issue as well.
In 2012 Facebook and Nylon teamed up for the magazines June/July music issue also in this year Nylon also did a Summer Music Tour featuring Neon Trees that was sponsored by Starbucks, Americas Next Top Model also announced in this year that Nylon would be their media partner for the show's 19th cycle.
Nylon has a strong social media presence by 2014 Nylon was fully active on Intagram had over 700,000 followers and a million Facebook fans.
In May 2014 Nylon was taken over by Nylon Median, Inc.,which is an affiliate of LA-based investor Marc Luzzatto through his team at Diversis Capital LLC.
The magazine is directed more towards the younger generation who are more tech savvy then the older generation this is shown through their increased activity on social media and having so many different levels as there brand doesn't just include fashion and how's to but also music and video.
