When a client sits down in the chair they are expecting to see a professional makeup artist/hair stylist who has a clean kit and is hygienic themselves with a tidy workplace they wont feel very happy if they find you to be sitting there popping gum, low cut top and old foundation on your brush roll, brushes that aren't clean it just doesn't sound nice know does it so to help prevent this image problem just follow these simple rules or guidelines.
- Clean your professional brushes after every use with a brush cleaner or baby shampoo to disinfect them and remove old product, if you don't have time or are lazy and don't want to spend 30 minutes to forever washing brushes, have a second set ready to go and this will give you leeway when it comes to cleaning your brushes but does mean you will have double the brushes to wash.
- Keep your appearance professional, don't wear low cut tops, put the cleavage away cause nobody want to stare at that while having their makeup done. Low skirts are also a no no there not professional they are just unsuitable. Keep your wardrobe in a monotone color and wear crew neck t-shirt, zip up jumpers, jeans, trainers or boots you want to have comfortable clothing not clothing your going to get a chill in.
- Open toe shoes are definitely not up for discussion on whether there suitable to wear to the workplace cause there not. Why you may be asking its because of trailing wires, loose floorboards and a host of other things including falling objects. Keep your shoes closed and hard wearing, its worth it to keep your toes safe,
- Talking about trailing wires, don't leave heated styling appliances curling down to the crowd or if there unplugged leaving the plug on the floor. I will tell you why not to do this, the first thing is that you will trip and fall, second of all the wires will possibly tangle and no one likes untangling wires there is a host of other reasons you don't want to have trailing wires. For the plug on the floor all I'm going to say is that you don't want to step on it because it will hurt.
- Cover your client in a gown, this helps keep the client clean simple as that.
- Be organised on your table so your not leaning over the client and making them uncomfortable that your in their personal space. That personal space is there for a reason, respect it.
- Don't chew gum when your with client, it sounds disgusting to the client and no one wants to see your tonsils no matter how pretty they are. Chew a mint before the client arrives or keep a traveling toothbrush and toothpaste with you if you think your breath is stinky.
So that's my couple of guidelines, follow these and you hopefully won't mess up in the professional world of makeup/hair.
