So i- D magazine is another magazine I love due to its more interesting magazine covers for example see below but where did this magazine come from well let me educate you,
At the start of the 80's exactly the year 1980 the former Vogue director Terry Jones wanted to create a magazine dedicated to fashion, music, art and of course the rising youth culture and thus i-D was born, the first issue was written up using a type writer in a hand stapled fanzine (a type of fan magazine) and since then they have evolved to the glossy magazine that still attains its street style and youth culture fan base.
It was in 1984 that Tony Elliot(Time Out) became a partner of i-D with a 51% share in the company while Mr Jones remained editor in chief and the creative director but in 2004 Mr Jones and his wife regained complete control of the company and in 2012 Vice Media acquired the magazine.
The magazine is known as being a training ground for new talent, now famous photographers who started their careers at i-D include Mario Testino, Terry Richardson, Nick Knight and Wolfgang Tillmans just to name a few. Many famous actors and singers have appeared on the cover such as Alexander McQueen, Kanye West, Madonna, Selena Gomez, Rihanna and Scarlett Johansson just to name a few.
Why the winking face or the one covered eye, well the i-D part is because when typed into phones it forms a winking face which is again in tune with the youth culture that the magazine is a part of, so for that the models who star on the front cover do the same.
