Hair

To complete my assessment I looked at the hair of the Tanya Taylor show and decided to do the loose braids that were shown.

First I parted the hair down the middle and sectioned two sections.

I then took one of these sections and crimped the hair using a crimper and then when the hair was crimped I braided the hair. Hiding the Elastics with a piece of hair wrapped around the elastic.

Repeat the same step on the other side.

Finished look:

I was really happy with how it came out, I liked the texture of the hair and how straight I was able to get the middle parting.

I didn't like how far the braids went up the neck as they didn't fit or shape like the braids in the show so next time I would do them looser and farther down with more of a sweep.

Operation: Fashion assessment is a go

So we had our fashion assessment split into two days, on day one we would have an hour to recreate the hair from the show and on the second day we would have an hour once again to recreate the makeup.

The show I selected to do was the Tanya Taylor Spring/Summer 2015 show which featured natural looking skin with a bold brows and a bright orange-red lip,

Personally I like the natural look this gives off and I like how the bright color enhances the naturlness of the skin and how its supposed to be young and fresh.

So how do you recreate this look, we'll hang around and I'll tell you,

First, you wanna cleanse, tone and moisturise the skin. Now not only does this clean and moisturise the skin but it also can be an enjoyable experience for the client as it can be relaxing for them. I used First aid beauty products for this part as I like how their for sensitive skin and don't have anything nasty in them.

So after I prepped the skin I then used Mac face and body with some of Crowns concealer to get some light coverage on the skin and then once I was through with that I found I wasn't liking how the base looked so I then went in with a little of Mac's face and body with a buffing brush and lightly buffed the foundation  into the skin.

Once I was happy with how the base was looking I began the eyes using a taupe shade from Mac and then built up the colour until there was a wash of colour of a brown tone onto the eyes, once completed with the normal base of the eyes I then went under the the brow bone with a white shadow just to add dimension and highlight to the face,

I also filled in the brows using Ben Nye pressed powder in Mink Stole and I also added mascara to the lashes.

Then I went onto the lips with a nude lip liner to neutralise some of  the natural colour of the lips and help the bright colour really pop on the lips. I then mixed macs lady danger with a orange concealer to create the orangey shade that's used within the show.

For final checks I added some power to under the eyes to set and sprayed some Mac prep and prime spray too add natural dewiness back to the skin.

The final look:
think this assessment went really well, the only thing I would change is the brows as I filled them in too dark when in the show they were more groomed and natural then heavy filling in. The lip liner wasn't the best either, the reason for this is a mix of two factors one I'm still not for steady when it comes to lip liner and I keep overdrawing them and the second my model kept laughing and talking, but I'm this industry your going to get people like this and you just have to deal with it.

I like though how I did the eyes and the skin as they reflected the look from the show really well even though I didn't use the same products the show had which was Nars Cosmetics.

Guidelines to professionalism

I wanted to do this blog post to say a couple of things about health and safety in the workplace and why its important other than the obvious prevents injury or death in the workplace.

When a client sits down in the chair they are expecting to see a professional makeup artist/hair stylist who has a clean kit and is hygienic themselves with a tidy workplace they wont feel very happy if they find you to be sitting there popping gum, low cut top and old foundation on your brush roll, brushes that aren't clean it just doesn't sound nice know does it so to help prevent this image problem just follow these simple rules or guidelines.

  • Clean your professional brushes after every use with a brush cleaner or baby shampoo to disinfect them and remove old product, if you don't have time or are lazy and don't want to spend 30 minutes to forever washing brushes, have a second set ready to go and this will give you leeway when it comes to cleaning your brushes but does mean you will have double the brushes to wash.
  • Keep your appearance professional, don't wear low cut tops, put the cleavage away cause nobody want to stare at that while having their makeup done. Low skirts are also a no no there not professional they are just unsuitable. Keep your wardrobe in a monotone color and wear crew neck t-shirt, zip up jumpers, jeans, trainers or boots you want to have comfortable clothing not clothing your going to get a chill in.
  • Open toe shoes are definitely not up for discussion on whether there suitable to wear to the workplace cause there not. Why you may be asking its because of trailing wires, loose floorboards and a host of other things including falling objects. Keep your shoes closed and hard wearing, its worth it to keep your toes safe,
  • Talking about trailing wires, don't leave heated styling appliances curling down to the crowd or if there unplugged leaving the plug on the floor. I will tell you why not to do this, the first thing is that you will trip and fall, second of all the wires will possibly tangle and no one likes untangling wires there is a host of other reasons you don't want to have trailing wires. For the plug on the floor all I'm going to say is that you don't want to step on it because it will hurt.
  • Cover your client in a gown, this helps keep the client clean simple as that.
  • Be organised on your table so your not leaning over the client and making them uncomfortable that your in their personal space. That personal space is there for a reason, respect it.
  • Don't chew gum when your with client, it sounds disgusting to the client and no one wants to see your tonsils no matter how pretty they are. Chew a mint before the client arrives or keep a traveling toothbrush and toothpaste with you if you think your breath is stinky.
So that's my couple of guidelines, follow these and you hopefully won't mess up in the professional world of makeup/hair.

Another makeup artist

The next make-up artist I'm going to talk about is Gucci Westman, an amazing woman who grew up in Sweden and California which later on in life inspired a lot of her body of work in the make up industry because of the difference in the cultures.

Originally Westman was the International Artistic Director for Lancome before in 2008 designing the colour collection for Lancome, she has also did the make-up and styled the models for advertisements and also represented Lancome in beauty and fashion events. In 2008 she moved companies and ended up in Revlon as a Global Artistic Director where she has undertaken many of the same duties as she did in Lancome.

More makeup artists.

I'm now going to talk about another Makeup artist I like who's name is Tom Pecheux, he is the creative director of Estee Lauder and is responsible for many beautiful high fashion shoots, below are some of my favorites.

This photo I find absolutely striking, its very minimalist in design yet it works, the models blue eyes pop under lashings of mascara streaked with brown and pink paint on top of a flawless base, its simplistic yet beautiful. I'm not sure what brand or company this picture is for or if it is just a portfolio shot. The makeup is likely to be done using Estee Lauder products, then using a blush or eye shadow that has water added for those lines on the face.

Another day, another runway

Another day another runway, today I will be looking at the Balenciaga Spring/ Summer 2014 collection this was show that included a lot of monochromatic outfits with pops of color thrown in by outfits of a purple, pastel pink and blue.

Lets talk about kits.

I thought I would do something a bit different,  I thought I would show you my kit and write my opinions on it.

Health and Safety Products
As you can see in the picture above I have a hand sanitiser, Micellar Water (in the little spray bottle) and Inglot Duraline.  I like this brand of sanitiser from the body shop because it smells nice and not like the alcoholic smelling ones you get everywhere else and its got a nice travel size bottle so its easy to store in your kit. Micellar Water is a essential in my kit, I use it when I'm using Aqua paints and also to cleanse the face before doing makeup because it makes sure all the dirt and any makeup residue is off before we begin and it is also suitable for sensitive skin which is always a good thing. The last thing is a essential it is Inglots Duraline this product is used to revive any eyeliner pot that has gotten cracked and dry or turn loose pigments into eyeliners or eyeshadows its is a multi use product and is absolutely essential for any makeup artist.

Face Products

Foundation,

In our kit we have MAC Face and Body Foundation which is a light coverage more natural looking foundation on the skin in the shades C1, C3, C4, N7 and N9 which is a good range of colours to age in any kit because it covers many types of skin tones and doesn't feel heavy on the skin and any colour that you don't have can be mixed up till you have the correct shade for the skin you are working on.
The other foundation we got is MAC Full Coverage Foundation which as the name suggests is a more heavy type of foundation personally I don't usually like to use too much because I find if you use too much it can look quite heavy and caked onto the skin, but it mixes well with other colours and is a good product to have in your kit if you want a more pigmented coverage on the skin. The colours I have in my kit are NC15, NW25, NW35 and NW45.

Practice for my assessment

For my assessment I have to recreate the makeup of one of the shows I have researched I have chosen the Tanya Taylor show from 2014 for Spring Summer.

I like the clean skin and yet bold lip, the image below is the one I will be recreating.

Up,up and away

Today's hair class was a chignon or a fancy word for a fancy bun. It started with our teacher showing us different styles that you can do but after that it was our turn.

As my dolls head was pre crimped there was a lot of frizz which made it quite impossible for the hairstyle to become smooth and sleek.

For the style I decided to add a french braid before creating the chignon. So I started off by combing the hair back and once that was completed I began the braid. Once the hair was french braided, I tied it off at the nape of the neck and then twisted the hair and formed it into a bun. I finished with hairspray and the style was completed.

Creative liner

Today we went a bit designer creating a look suitable for catwalk which is creative liner and black lips.

How to do this look

Using a buffing brush cover  anything that is red toned on the skin very lightly with a warmer foundation, then work  a little bit of Mac strobe cream into the skin using a buffing brush to create a natural glow, once that is buffed in, go in with a lighter coverage foundation, and then buff into the skin. To set these products lightly dust the skin with a face powder.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring Summer 2014

Today were going to talk about another designer, were going to talk about Marc Jacobs Spring Summer 2014 collection. Honestly I'm not a huge fan of the makeup look in this show.

Though I like the fact there is not only women in this show but also men.

Elie Saab Autumn Winter 15/16

This is one of my favourite collections from Elie Saab, I love how this collection goes from being light pastel colours to a more saker palette almost with a rock and roll twist to it. The patterning in these dresses are gorgeous and the head crows just complete the entire look.
